I think because Toyota went with exterior door handles on the access cab doors and was still using the ‘90s style door handles.
Most others weren’t using external door handles on their extended cab models at the time.

I find it to be much more convenient than the hidden handles. The rear doors work just like regular doors. Fantastic trucks.

I remember them being referred to as 7/8's size. My dad drives a 2000 and I had a 2006. Perfect size truck.

The gen 1 Tundra was a good size. plus V8
